  8. Concentric DIAL Units | Higher Rate Single String Wells & In-Situ Gas Lift

DIAL units are the primary in-well control and monitoring component of Silverwell’s Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift production optimization system.

Each tubing deployed Concentric DIAL unit has up to six independently actuated gas lift injection valves. Custom orifice configurations are selected to match predicted gas injection needs across a well’s operating life.

Multiple DIAL Units can be installed with a single Tubing Encased Conductor (TEC) providing real time control of injection rate and depth. Integral Check Valves qualified to API 19G2 assure well integrity and are immune to chatter that plague conventional gas lift systems.

Continuous downhole permanent monitoring data informs production and reservoir management decisions including automated gas lift production optimization.

DIAL increases production and reduces cost with interventionless operation that dramatically reduces HSE risk. DIAL also enables deeper injection to maximize drawdown and efficient use of available lift gas.

  14. DIAL TEC Protectors | Assuring life-of-well reliability

Integrity of the Tubing Encased Conductor (TEC) line during installation is critical to the long-term reliability of a DIAL gas lift production optimization system. Silverwell adopts recognized industry best practices in designing TEC clamping and protection strategies.

The DIAL system’s TEC is protected in two ways: by clamping the TEC to the production string and completion components; and by protecting the TEC when there is an upset in the OD of the completion string

Clamps are available in cast or pressed steel configurations with the choice dependent on the specifics of the application. They are typically placed over couplings in the production string - Cross Coupling Protectors.

Custom designs can be specfied to provide protection for tubing crossovers, to secure spliced TEC, or to provide stand off for completion components such as Subsurface Safety Valves and Sliding Sleeves.

  15. DIAL Cablehead Termination | High reliability testable TEC connections

DIAL in-well units are connected to surface via a Tubing Encased Conductor (TEC). This provides power and communication.

The DIAL Cablehead Termination allows electrical communication between the TEC and the DIAL Units while offering protection from the harsh downhole environment.

Internally, the termination provides a pluggable electrical interface that can be made up on the rig floor during completion operations or off-line ahead of time. Externally, it uses industry standard gas tight cone-and-thread as well as ferrule-style seals to protect the internals from well fluids. After makeup, these seals are fully pressure testable before being installed in the well.

Integral to the DIAL Unit there is also a redundant GTMS (Glass to Metal Seal). This isolates the unit’s electronics from the inside of the Cablehead Termination in case there is eventual gas ingress.

Our expert Q&A sessions are designed to give you insight into the people behind Silverwell and share the value they bring. Each month, one of our global experts will share information on their role and their vision for the future of the industry.

Gerry Patterson is our company President in the US as well as Vice President of Engineering. DIAL in to learn about his interests, expertise, and how he is enjoying working with us.

Tell us about yourself and your background.

    Gerard Patterson

I’m originally from Northern British Colombia, Canada, where I attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, I worked as a wireline engineer. Shortly after, I moved into the technical support group within the organization. I later relocated to the US and transitioned into R & D. Since 2007, I’ve worked in new product development and deployment across various engineering disciplines such as electro-mechanical design, and software engineering at numerous levels from embedded systems to cloud-based product deployments.

Outside of work, I enjoy photography, graphic design (VFX, animation, modeling, etc.), camping, and traveling.

    What does your role involve?

I’ve been with Silverwell since August 2018 and my day-to-day usually starts with several calls to our overseas team and customers. By mid-day this transitions to reviewing the status of various ongoing projects in Engineering, Operations, and Manufacturing. The end of the day is typically devoted to catching up on emails, answering questions, and scheduling work for the rest of the Engineering group.

When I started at Silverwell, I was surprised at the amount that was invested in corporate governance and QHSE for the size of the company. We take it very seriously and as a result, we can attract and work with the largest operators in the industry.

I’m particularly excited about two things going on at Silverwell right now. One is our dedication to staff development programs; we’re growing in 2022 and need to ensure we add and promote people in the right places to accomplish the work. Second is the automation and integration capabilities of our product that enables our clients to take advantage of the hardware we have spent the last number of years developing and qualifying.

What does Silverwell bring to the industry?

Silverwell is different because we’re the pioneers of electric gas lift – we have a history in the market with years of run-time on our product. We are on our second and third generation of products whereas alternative technologies are just entering the market. Our goal is to be the industry leader from land to subsea.

In recent years we’ve seen a focus on reducing the number of wells drilled while also producing more from each well. Investors are rapidly looking for efficiencies and opportunities for new developments. New technology will be focused on surveillance of production; Silverwell is perfectly positioned to address these needs since our main product offering emphasizes production optimization with less intervention.

Has your perspective of the Industry changed since you entered? How do you stay up to date?

It’s a much, much larger industry than I originally appreciated when I first started. It takes a large number of people in nearly every discipline to make everything work.

I stay up to date by reading trade journals and attending conferences such as ALRDC. I’m also a member of AWES (Advanced Well Equipment Standards) and API (American Petroleum Institute) 19G2 working group.

How have things changed in the industry since the onset of the pandemic?

This period has required more up front planning and utilizing local contractors in areas where it would not be feasible to have people travel and be quarantined for extended periods. We developed an online training program for third party crews in Malaysia, which led to the successful installation of our first dual string completion. This makes our technology even more accessible and easy to implement globally.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of entering the industry?

Get hands-on experience early in your career. It will be useful. Do not “settle in” (either in position or location). Even the same position in a different region will present new challenges. The skills and experiences you develop in one job will almost always be useful in the next one or the one after that.

Our expert Q&A sessions are designed to give you insight into the people behind Silverwell and share the value they bring. Each month, one of our global experts will share information on their role and their vision for the future of the industry.

Joel Shaw is Silverwell’s Product Line Vice President for DIAL technologies. DIAL in to learn about his background, expertise, and vision for Silverwell.

    Joel Shaw

Tell us about yourself and your background

I was born in Bellevue, WA but by the time I was four I successfully convinced my parents to move to Texas. I received my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (with an emphasis in Computer Science) from Texas A&M University. I’ve always enjoyed building and tinkering; I even managed to jack up the family car to take the wheels off around four years old - my family didn’t realize it until I came inside asking for help to remove the lug nuts. Engineering felt like a natural fit for me growing up since I’ve always had a passion for ideation and invention. As opposed to other industries, the oilfield offers the opportunity to invent tools and equipment on many different fronts in parallel. For instance, in the automotive you might spend years optimizing a door handle. Over the same period in the oil industry one can develop a half dozen completion tools, each of which have a significant impact on production and utilizing resources in a safer and more efficient manner.

    What does your role involve?

As the Product line VP, I manage the life cycle, operations, and intellectual property for Silverwell’s DIAL technology; right now I’m working on Expanding Silverwell product offering into new niches. My primary function is guiding Silverwell’s product and service offerings from their inception, through their lives, and into their eventual retirement. This also includes providing our sales, operations, engineering, and manufacturing teams with the tools and information they need to best perform their roles with the company. I started at Silverwell over three and a half years ago and I’ve previously had the roles of Chief Mechanical Engineer and Product Line Manager.

    Why Silverwell?

No one can match the speed, quality, and experience with which Silverwell can pull together products and designs to suit specific market needs. I’ve worked in various sized organizations and Silverwell’s nimbleness has been a refreshing change. Silverwell brings an opportunity to increase production while saving money and reducing the oil industry’s carbon footprint.

Silverwell will be the world’s premier supplier for intelligent gas lift products, with high-quality, focused systems for markets such as subsea, dual string, land, and unconventional wells. Our DIAL system quickly pays for itself and has the ability to significantly reduce your environmental footprint. This makes it a critical tool in the ongoing pursuit of a more sustainable industry.

What do you think is next for the industry?

As more equipment is installed in wells, pad and field-wide gas lift optimization will become commonplace. This means that more oil can be produced from the same footprint with less greenhouse gas emissions. Silverwell is at the forefront of surface controlled gas lift technology; this includes the equipment, the implementation, the design, and the optimization. As always, oil price and profitability are key factors in this industry. However, greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint have been much more of a concern over recent decades. Silverwell’s DIAL system addresses these concerns head on.

How do you stay involved in the industry? Do you have advice for anyone thinking about joining?

I keep updated by active involvement in various trade groups such as ALRDC (Artificial Lift Research and Development Council), SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers), and ICT (Inflow Control technology). I’m a member of several API committees tasked with updating and creating industry standards.

If you’re adventurous and creative, go for it – I doubt you’ll find a more exciting and interesting industry to be in.

How has the pandemic changed Silverwell’s operations?

The biggest issue has been getting people to location for jobs. We’ve adapted by expanding our training program and materials to bring local personnel up to speed more effectively. From an operations perspective, it has also driven us to do more with less personnel - such as automating health checks during RIH. Reduced Silverwell personnel on location has highlighted the importance of real time data and communications onsite, leading to data integration prior to install, or even satellite communication technologies. Covid has also driven many of our meetings and interactions to a virtual environment. While this eliminates much of the warmth and personal interaction, it has allowed us to get more into a tightened schedule due to reduced travel times.

Once the DIAL equipment has been installed, it is invaluable in a pandemic or post-pandemic world. There is no need for physical human intervention to optimization wells. They can be optimized to maximize oil production and minimize environmental footprint remotely without any intervention or risk to personnel.

I also have regional operations responsibilities such as project management and job preparation as well as deploying at client locations to install and commission our equipment. Our clients typically want to know about the additional functionality our system can offer compared to a traditional gas lift valve, which as an enthusiastic “Techy”, I am happy to discuss. It's enjoyable to see how our system has improved gas lift operations and our case history is making this discussion easier as time goes by.

What trends do you think the oil and gas industry will see over the next five years? How can Silverwell contribute?

I think we will begin to see a call for more automation and artificial intelligence within the industry. With the digital world evolving in other industries, I see no reason why oil and gas would not follow this route. DIAL is taking a step forward in the industry and introducing capabilities far beyond what the industry currently offers to address the shift to digital and the need for surface control & monitoring of gas lifted wells. . Oilfield technology companies today need to address where automation is required and need to fully understand the operator’s requirements to ensure the correct solution is implemented. I feel by applying DIAL’s technological capabilities, we are doing just that for the artificial lift space. I would like to see Silverwell revolutionize artificial lift with data centers, working in collaboration with operators to ensure their assets are managed and producing as efficiently as possible.

Why is faster technology adoption important for the oil and gas industry?

The industry needs new technology to remain competitive with other energy sources. Innovative and intelligent technology reduces operating expenditure.

  26. DIAL System Overview

DIAL is a production optimization system integrating in-well monitoring and control of gas lift well performance, with surface analytics and automation, to continually optimize gas lifted fields remotely and without intervention.

The DIAL system brings data and control integration to gas lift production management. A Surface Control System (SCS) allows local or remote monitoring of in-well production parameters of pressure, temperature, and injection rate. The SCS also controls in-well DIAL gas injection units to vary gas injection depth and rate without intervention to maintain optimized production. DIAL units are the in-well component of the system and each one features up to 6 independent injection orifices with a different port size, offering a wide range of possible injection rates. The injection orifices can be individually opened and closed from the surface without requiring a drop in casing pressure, offering deeper injection and increased production. DIAL units are connected to surface via a tubing encased conductor line that provides power and communications. When combined with Silverwell’s Digital Integration Unit (DIU) and associated DIAL-It-In software suite gas lifted well production optimization can be fully automated. Aligning with the widening adoption of digital oilfield production management strategies DIAL systems several processes such as well unloading, production optimization, gas usage optimization, and troubleshooting can be automated under the supervision of the operator.

  31. Digital Intelligent Annulus Vent (DIAV) | The safer and greener solution to well integrity problems

Sustained Annular Pressure (SAP) is excessive casing pressure in wells that persistently rebuilds after bleed-down.

Affecting more than 30% of wells and costing operators billions of dollars annually, SAP results from gas migration through any number of conduits: a leaking cement sheath, tubing connections, downhole accessories, packers or wellhead seals, casing degradation or failure of any other well barriers.

Oil & gas wells are routinely visited to check for potential well integrity problems such as annulus pressure build-up, and any excess pressure is bled to the atmosphere. Not only does this cost the operator and create safety concerns to personnel and property, it also poses a hazard to the environment. This is especially true in the presence of corrosive gases or poisonous gasses.

Silverwell offers a safer and greener solution with its Digital Intelligent Annulus Vent (DIAV). It offers continuous monitoring of the annulus, and the DIAV valve will open venting pressurized gas in the annulus to the production tubing. Silverwell enables all of this without any greenhouse gas emissions or placing personnel at the wellsite where they face risks.

The main components of Silverwell’s DIAV system stem directly from their field proven gas lift equipment. Similar to its Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift (DIAL) counterpart, the DIAV unit consists of a metal-to-metal actuated seal to selectively block or vent flow from the annulus to the tubing. It also includes a back check valve to keep any production pressure from reaching the annulus. Opposed to its DIAL counterpart, the DIAV unit would be installed as near as possible to the tubing hanger. This maintains any completion fluid in the annulus as well as reducing the TEC Demands. The DIAV system uses the same surface equipment as the DIAL system, and other Silverwell components can be included on the same TEC.

Operationally, the DIAV system continually monitors the annulus pressure. When it reaches a specified pressure, it can alert the operator to vent the casing or automatically vent the annulus without human intervention.

  32. Dual String Applications

Dual String gas lift applications offer significantly reduced cost and environmental impact by utilizing a single well to independently produce two zones.

These have historically utilized a combination of Production Pressure Operated (PPO) valves in one string and Injection Pressure Operated (IPO) valves in the other to theoretically provide some level of control in each well, but the gas always ends up going to the weaker string. In Practice these systems are rife with multi-pointing, instability, and chatter leading many operators to only produce one string at a time or abandon dual string completions altogether.

Silverwell’s DIAL System solves the problems of IPO / PPO Dual String Completions by giving operators the ability to instantly and independently control gas lift in each string without intervention. Rather than the strings fighting each other for lift gas, the operator can control and optimize total production leading to more production, less cost, and reduced carbon impact.

London, United Kingdom – (19 November 2020) - Silverwell has completed the world’s first successful offshore installation of an intelligent dual string gas lift completion for a client in South-East Asia. Two independently surface-monitored and controlled gas lift production optimisation systems were installed side-by-side in the same well. Silverwell’s DIAL (Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift) system has enabled completely independent and remote optimization of production from two producing reservoir zones in this deviated offshore well. In comparison to conventional intervention-based gas lift technologies, the client expects to realize significant enhancements to production rate as well as reduced HSE risk and operating costs.

In a broader strategic context, this installation of DIAL, a digitally enabled technology, will continue to drive a paradigm shift to intelligent gas lift optimization for Silverwell’s client. The benefit of dual-string completions in reducing drilling CAPEX by independently producing two reservoirs in one well can now be fully realized in gas lifted fields. The well is also the first on an unmanned platform to be equipped with DIAL. The interventionless and remote operating capability make continuous adjustment and optimization of gas lifted production possible without the presence of production operations personnel on the platform.

Silverwell recognizes that this installation is a significant milestone for its client, a long-time supporter of the company’s work. Silverwell also recognizes the invaluable contribution of the company’s local installation partner. This particularly the case in overcoming logistical constraints imposed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  41. In-Situ Gas Lift | A closed loop system for in-situ well optimization

In-situ gas lift (or auto gas lift) systems consists of a single well that penetrates both gas and oil formations.

They utilize the gas zone as the source of lift gas for the oil zone. Gas supply, its corresponding infrastructure, and compression capabilities are no longer required. This offers significant capital savings, weight reduction, footprint reduction, and reduced Green House Gas emissions. It also accelerates field development by eliminating the construction and integration of a surface gas delivery infrastructure.

Successfully operating In-situ gas lift wells requires interventionless adjustments of the lift gas to accommodate changes in liquids production or formation pressures. Silverwell’s DIAL system enables this by providing a combination of surface control for downhole gas injection as well as pressure monitoring to provide a window to well conditions. Together, these provide a closed-loop system for in-situ well optimization.

  42. In Situ Gas Lift Can Increase Production With Fewer Costs, Time, and Environmental Risks

There are approximately 2 million oil wells in operation worldwide and more than half of them use an artificial lift system to deliver oil to the surface in a controlled manner.

Gas lift is a method of artificial lift that uses gas to reduce the bottom hole tubing pressure so the existing formation pressure can lift the fluids in the well. Conventional gas lift systems use valves with pre-configured orifice sizes, installed into side pocket mandrels along the completion string. These increase production by injecting high-pressure gas from the casing annulus into the fluids in the production tubing. The injected gas reduces fluid density and hydrostatic pressure so the fluids can be lifted to the surface.

Fields with oil-producing reservoirs also often include a gas-producing stratum that can be used to provide gas lift. The gas is brought to the surface, separated from the liquids, chemically altered, compressed to an acceptable pressure, distributed to the oil production wells, and injected down their annuli.

However, this method requires two sets of wells: one set to produce the lift gas and another set to produce the oil. In addition, extensive and expensive surface infrastructure, such as compressors and pipelines are required. This creates a risk to personnel on-site and an increased environmental hazard both at the wellsite and in the locality through the transportation of plant and equipment.

    Silverwell DIAL In-Situ Gas-Lift

An Alternative Form of Gas Lift

Where circumstances permit, natural, auto, or in situ gas lift can be a highly cost-effective alternative solution. With an in situ gas lift system, the gas and oil reservoirs have to be accessible from the same well. As a result, they are less commonly used than conventional systems.

Rather than lifting the gas to the surface, compressing it, and injecting it down the casing annulus of another well, in situ systems take the gas from a reservoir gas cap or zone and flow it directly into the production tubing. This means that each well taps into both the gas zone and the oil zone.

Regardless of whether the gas is above or below the oil zone, the entire in situ system is retained downhole. This eliminates the expense and environmental impact of surface infrastructure and certain equipment - such as a compressor - required by traditional gas lift. It also avoids unnecessary excess weight on offshore platforms. The gas reservoir itself acts as its compression and distribution facilities, while downhole metering and control serve as the surface choke and downhole gas lift valves.

    More Control. Less intervention.

As the only functional component of the in situ gas lift system, success is contingent upon accurate control and metering of the gas flow from the gas formation into the oil production string. It is therefore important that the metering and control equipment used are both highly sensitive and flexible enough to rapidly adapt to changes in the oil or gas reservoirs to optimize the entire system.

In situ gas lift systems allow for control of the gas injection rate from a gas zone. Using technologies that can be adjusted remotely, such as the Silverwell digital intelligent artificial lift (DIAL), gas injection rates are changed without the need for well intervention.

DIAL uses just one tubing encapsulated cable (TEC) for all the gas lift and monitoring devices in the well. This avoids the need for multiple hydraulic lines. Back-check valves block the flow from the tubing to the annulus, ensuring the gas zones cannot be contaminated with fluids from the oil zones.

In situ gas lift systems are not applicable everywhere, but when deployed they can generate significant benefits for operators. The latest technologies to support in situ gas lift are extending those benefits even further by bringing new fields online at a faster rate, lowering carbon emissions, and enabling increased production.

  73. Three Core TEC Line | Power & comms to integrate in-well components with surface control system

Silverwell’s Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift (DIAL) gas lift production optimization system uses a Tubing Encased Conductor (TEC) line for communication and control between downhole DIAL Units and the Surface Control System (SCS).

Three TEC conductors provide an electrical pathway for power and communications. Individual conductors each have their own insulation bound together by an inner encapsulation. This inner loom is encapsulated by a ¼” metal tube to protect the conductors from wellbore fluids and downhole pressure. The metal tube is encapsulated with an outer encapsulation composed of a durable thermoplastic to provide abrasion, point load, and impact resistance.

The TEC is securely clamped to the production string at every joint and consistently monitored for damage during Run in Hole.
